10 April 2018 Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

The EUYO is delighted to announce that it is one of five recipients to be awarded the 2018 Cultural Diplomat of the Year award. The award is given by CultureSummit Abu Dhabi 2018, a global forum taking place in the capital of the United Arab Emirates from 8th to 12th April 2018. The Summit has brought together 450 leaders from 85 countries from the worlds of government, arts, media and technology to collaborate and address in concrete ways the role culture can play in addressing the great challenges of our time, from poverty and extremism to climate change and conflict. Other recipients of the 2018 Cultural Diplomat of the Year award are Silk Road Ensemble, Karim Wasfi, the Prince Claus Fund and the late Emirati artist Hassan Sharif.

In celebration of the award, the EUYO will be performing at CultureSummit on the evening of 10 April. Led by EUYO Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko, the Orchestra’s performance will include a special collaboration with the celebrated Emirati composer and Oud player, Faisal Al Saari, with movements from his 2016 composition Zayed’s Dream. The EUYO’s appearance at CultureSummit is made possible by the Orchestra’s current education and performance residency at Dubai Opera, where it will be presenting final concerts of Gershwin, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov and Ravel, on the 12th and 13th April.

CultureSummit Abu Dhabi is presented by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT) in conjunction with The Rothkopf Group, an interactive media and advisory firm specializing in global issues, and TCP Ventures, a global producer of artistic events at the intersection of culture and social impact. Partners of the 2018 Summit include France 24, Artnews, Bloomberg, The National, and Sky News Arabia.

Chair of the Steering Committee and UAE Minster of Culture and Knowledge Development, HE Noura Al Kaabi said: “Since its inaugural edition in 2017, which established CultureSummit as one of world’s most prestigious convenings of leaders across the arts, policy, technology and media, we have awarded Cultural Diplomat of the Year to honour individuals and organisations leading the field of cultural diplomacy with contributions that address the world’s pressing challenges through the power of culture.

EUYO Co-Chair Ian Stoutzker CBE, and CEO Marshall Marcus, said: “As Cultural Ambassadors for the European Union since 1976 the EUYO is delighted to accept CultureSummit’s 2018 Cultural Diplomat of the Year award. The Orchestra is dedicated to promoting international dialogue, respect between nations and increased understanding through music and culture, and we are particularly honoured to have received this award from CultureSummit in 2018, European Year of Cultural Heritage”.
