EUYO at EXPO 2020 Dubai with concerts, a world premiere and a panel debate on culture and citizenship

22/10/2021 - The European Union Youth Orchestra is delighted to announce two concerts at EXPO 2020 in Dubai, with performances by an EUYO brass quintet ensemble of members and recent alumni. The performances have been made possible thanks to the cooperation with our Creative Partner EMMA For Peace (Euro-Mediterranean Music Academy), a global non-profit organization that promotes peace and cooperation for development through music diplomacy and education.

The EUYO performances are part of the events of AQDAR Art, an initiative powered by EMMA for Peace in the AQDAR World Summit, a global platform that gathers leaders, decision-makers, experts and companies from around the world to discuss and debate global issues of importance.

“Together through Music”

26 October, h 20.00 - 27 October, h 13.00 | Hall 1A South, EXPO 2020 Dubai Exhibition Center

Two concerts by the name “Together through Music” have been programmed with EMMA for Peace and the AQDAR World Summit using the inspiration of EXPO 2020 Dubai as a crossroads of world culture. Middle Eastern, European, North American and South American music will be performed by an EUYO Brass Quintet bringing together folk, jazz, classical and contemporary idioms; this eclectic melting pot of sounds a metaphor for the extraordinary way that music brings us all together.

Compositions to be performed include selections from the European Renaissance Dances by Tylman Susato, Bach’s Fugue in G minor, the American Irish diaspora ballad Danny Boy, US composer Michael Kamen’s Quintet, and excerpts from Gershwin’s famous opera Porgy & Bess. A section is devoted to Astor Piazzolla, with his Libertango and the Suite from María de Buenos Aires, as well as the famous tango melodies of La cumparsita by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, all of which is followed by a new arrangement of the famous ‘Africa’ by the rock duo David Paich and Jeff Porcaro, a piece that climbed the 1983 top 100 charts to become an instant hit.

The programme closes with Aqdar for Peace: from UAE to the World a world première by Ihab Darwish, a young Emirati composer, whose intimate and personal pieces are strongly associated with Emirati musical traditions, and in which the EUYO players will be joined by local Emirati musicians.

Panel Discussion on Culture and Global Citizenship

26 October | 14.15-15.00 | Aqdar Theater – Dubai Exhibition Center of the EXPO 2020
