The 2018 Spring Tour is the major project at the heart of the EUYO’s first half of this celebratory year. EUYO Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko directs three great works on a tour of Europe and Dubai: Brahms and Rachmaninov’s Second Symphonies, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s beguiling and virtuosic Scheherazade. EUYO embraces the European Year of Cultural Heritage, by devoting its entire 2018 season to Europe’s musical heritage.
Young players from 28 EU member states will come together to rehearse in various city halls and spaces offered by the Conservatorio G. Frescobaldi of Ferrara, culminating in a performance on Friday 30th March at the Teatro Abbado. The concert will mark the official opening of a three year residency project following the Orchestra's recent announcement of it establishing a legal and operational seat in Ferrara and Rome, and a new broadcast partnership with RAI, after accepting an offer from Dario Franceschini, Italian Minister of Culture, and the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism at the end of 2017.
The 2018 Spring Tours sees a continuation and expansion of the Orchestra’s work with Grafenegg, where the Orchestra has played for many years and with whom it has been in partnership with the European Music Campus since 2014. For the first time, the EUYO appears as Orchestra in Residence at Grafenegg and will give both formal and informal concerts during its April 2018 stay. The Orchestra will be joined by pianist Till Fellner for an Easter Concert on Sunday 1 April with performances of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.27 in B-flat major, Brahms Symphony No.2 in D major and Strauss’s Voices of Spring Waltz. As part of Grafenegg’s Easter celebrations, chamber groups of musicians will perform music on the theme of spring in the beautiful Schloss Grafenegg.
The 2018 Spring Tour also marks the beginning of an exciting new education and performance residency at Dubai Opera. In a wide-ranging series of open rehearsals, outreach events and concerts, the Orchestra's residency will engage a diverse group of audiences with formal and informal events, including work with young musicians resident in Dubai and the UAE. The Orchestra will be led by its Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko and will perform alongside the critically acclaimed young Jordanian piano soloist Karim Said.
The EUYO continues its multi-year project Capital Sounds, a programme of performances in all 28 EU member states that celebrates the countries and cultural diversity of Europe. The Orchestra will be joined by Vasily Petrenko and pianist Alexandra Dariescu at the grand Romanian Anthenaeum in Bucharest. President of the Romanian Cultural Institute Liliana Turoiu will attend as guest speaker, following performances by National Guest performers AdMusicam Ensemble. With 2018 marking 100 years since the great unification of Romania, the EUYO’s performance is a reminder of Europe’s past challenges and a celebration of its rich cultural legacy.
The Orchestra will commence its European Year of Cultural Heritage Tours in Alicante as part of Europe Day celebrations. EUYO alumnus Sarah Sew will direct the Orchestra in an extensive repertoire, concluding with a performance of the European Anthem Ode to Joy, as part of the official #Ode2Joy Challenge.Sarah Sew will lead the musicians in a series of formal and informal performances in São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Montevideo as part of the celebrations. In June, the Orchestra’s Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko will direct 40 musicians in a performance in Dresden to mark the European Culture Prize TAURUS 2018, joined by soloists Anja Harteros, Piotr Beczala, Daniel Hope, Jan Vogler and the Dresdner Kreuzchor. On 21 June, chamber ensembles of the Orchestra will gather in Berlin to perform as part of Europa Nostra’s official European Cultural Heritage Summit.
Looking ahead, the new annually chosen Grafenegg Academy Orchestra will begin in July 2018. The international personnel of the orchestra with EUYO alumni at its heart meets for the first time in Grafenegg under the direction of the new director and visionary behind Campus Grafenegg, Leon Botstein.
2018 is one of the Orchestra's busiest years yet, with performances of more than forty compositions from all corners of Europe in live concerts in thirteen countries that will be broadcast around the globe. As cultural ambassador for the European Union, the EUYO embraces the EU’s 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage, and is proud to be devoting its entire 2018 season to celebrate Europe’s musical heritage.Details of EUYO activity in the second half of 2018 will be announced in July.
