Vladimir Ashkenazy retires from public performances

17/01/2020 - On the occasion of Vladimir Ashkenazy's recently announced decision to retire from public performances, the European Union Youth Orchestra wishes to congratulate him for his unique and extraordinary career, and to place on record its remarkable debt to this great musician and humanist.

During many years of extraordinary and generous service to the Orchestra including fifteen years as the Orchestra's Music Director between 2000 and 2015, Vladimir Ashkenazy inspired and supported generations of Europe's most talented young musicians. His work and deep friendship with the EUYO's Founding President Joy Bryer was legendary. His dedication to music will no doubt continue, but his kindly wit and unrivalled musicianship will surely be missed on the stages of the world's concert halls.
