Wieland Welzel

A first-prize winner of the 1986 Jugend musiziert competition as percussion solo, Wieland Welzel studied at the Musikhochschule Lübeck and was a member of the German Federal Youth Orchestra and of the EUYO. Wieland began his first engagement as a Principal Timpani in the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin in 1995, and since 1997 he is Principal Timpani with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Wieland has been a guest lecturer at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen for 10 years and currently teaches at the Herbert von Karajan Academy. In 2017 he founded the “Wieland’s Paukenkurs”, his very own format of a yearly week-long masterclass out in the nature of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.
