Laura Brandão Álvares

Laura Sofia Brandão Álvares, born in 2001 in Lisbon, Portugal, has studied for 12 years at Escola Artística de Música do Conservatório Nacional in Lisbon with professor Catherine Strynckx. At present she is concluding her Cello Bachelor degree with professor Rafael Rosenfeld at the Hochschule für Musik FHNW, Klassik in Basel, Switzerland. She has studied Chamber Music with Sol Gabetta, Anna Gebert, Jiří Němeček, Paulo Jorge Ferreira, among others.
Laura has participated in Steven Isserlis, Ophélie Gaillard, Xavier Gagnepain, Michel Strauss, Paulo Gaio Lima, Susanne Müller-Hornbach, Filipe Quaresma’s cello masterclasses, as well as chamber music masterclasses with Armida Quartet, Steven Isserlis, Anthony Marwood and Paulo Jorge Ferreira.
Laura has played in different orchestras and conductors, such as the Chamber Academy Basel under Stephanie Gonley’s direction, Symphony Orchestra of the Hochschule für Musik FHNW Basel conducted by Johannes Schlaefli and Raphaël Oleg, Lisbon Youth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christopher Bochmann, Jugengsymphonieorchester Basel with Aurelia Pollak Bolo or Youth Orchestra of the Music Conservatory of Portugal conducted by Fernando Marinho.
She has been awarded in solo and chamber music competitions, such as the 20th International Competition Cidade do Fundão, the Jovem.Com 2019 Competition, the Young Musicians Award 2017, promoted by Antena 2 and RTP (with her group Quartetiev), the Fafe Luso-Spanish Competition.
Laura has performed at the Tonhalle Zürich, Sadtcasino Basel, Centro Cultural de Belém and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation with her chamber music groups or integrated in various orchestras.
