Jose Carlos Palmero Casanova

José Carlos Palmero Casanova, born in Cádiz in 1999. He began his viola studies at the Conservatory of his hometown with Antonio Cortés. He moved to Madrid to do his Bachelor's degree with Laure Gaudron and is currently finishing his Master's degree at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg in the class of Wolfram Christ with a scholarship from the Oscar und Vera Ritter Foundation and the Freiburg Stiftungverwaltung. He has received masterclasses from Diemut Poppen, Harmut Rohde and Nobuko Imai among others and baroque viola lessons from Gottfried von der Goltz.

He has been a member of the Orquesta Joven de Andalucía (2014-21) and the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (2019-present). He is a permanent guest of the Baden Baden Philharmonie, an academician of ADDA Sinfónica and participates in Festivals such as the Gustav Mahler Academy (Bolzano, 2022) or the Johann Sebastian Bach Academy 2023.

One of his great passions is chamber music, being very active since his beginnings in 2014 with the quartet in his homeland, in Madrid and currently in Freiburg participating in different formations, modern, contemporary (projects with Ensemble Recherche) and historicist.

He is currently studying composition with the maestro Francisco Toledo Pica. Also interested in cultural management, he promoted and organised the Festival Bahía de Cádiz 2020.

José Carlos plays a viola by Germain Trumpf (2020) and a bow by Francisco González (2019) both made in Madrid and a baroque viola and bow on loan from the HfM Freiburg.
