Martijn van Rijswijk

Martijn was born in 1997 in Wijk en Aalburg, a small village in Brabant, the south of the Netherlands. While growing up in this village, he discovered the tuba at the age of 10 thanks to the local Brassband: ‘Oefening en Uitspanning’. After years of playing with some of the most prestigious wind bands in Europe, Martijn decided to pursue a career as a professional musician.
In 2016 he started studying with Hendrik Jan Renes, solo tuba of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, at the conservatory of Rotterdam. During his Bachelor studies he developed a broad interest and knowledge in different genres of music, such as contemporary, classical, jazz and funk. Martijn had the opportunity to follow classes with Brandt Attema, Bart van Lier, Rex Martin and Avital Handler. As tuba player of the Codarts Symphony orchestra, he got to work several times under the direction of Valery Gergiev, performing major works of Shostakovich and Prokofiev.
In 2019 Martijn performed a special series of concerts with the Dutch National Opera/Holland Festival, by participating in the ‘Aus Licht’ cycle of Karlheinz Stockhausen.
Martijn was privileged to visit world famous tuba artist Sergio Carolino several times in Portugal. His lessons have been a major influence on Martijn’s musical and personal career. Thanks to the guidance of his teacher Hendrik Jan Renes, Martijn graduated Bachelor Cum Laude in 2020 and Master Cum Laude in 2023.
From 2017 on, Martijn has been working with leading professional orchestras and conductors in the Netherlands and abroad, such as the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Residence orchestra The Hague, Dutch National Ballet Orchestra and many others.
