Tonka Javorovic

Tonka started playing cello at the age of seven with prof. Bernarda Debuš Redžić in Zagreb, Croatia. Aged 17, Tonka was accepted into the Academy of Music, University of Zagreb. 

She studies with prof. Valter Dešpalj with whom she is currently doing her 3rd year of integrated graduate study.

Tonka has won awards in many national and international competitions over the years, including the Croatian Competition of students of music and dance, obtaining 1st place four years in a row, and 2nd place in the 8th International cello competition 'Antonio Janigro' 2010. in Poreč, Croatia. There she also won the Zagreb soloists special award - concert with The Zagreb solists in season 2011/2012. She also performed with the Zagreb soloists in 2017.

In recent years, she has attended master classes with Silvija Sondeckiene, Lithuania; Annette Cleary, Ireland;  Mihovil Karuza, Croatia; Dobrila Berković Magdalenić, Croatia; Evgeny Rumyantsev, Russia; Monika Leskovar, Croatia and Gustavo Tavares, Brazil. 

In summer of 2013 she was a member of the Leverhulme summer school organized by the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) and was one of first two Croatian members in the EUYO. In 2014 she was a member of the Campus Orchestra organized by EUYO. Since the summer of 2015 Tonka has been a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra – EUYO.

Tonka has also taken part in projects with the SO DO orchestra, the System of El Sistema of Venezuela Orchestra and the Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra.

Tonka won five Oscars of knowledge granted by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the Agency for Education of Croatia, for achieving excellent results and winning first place in the national competition.

She is involved in solo and chamber music activities and is a permanent member of a piano trio and duo with the award-wining Croatian pianist Dora Iveković.
