Iris van den Bos

Since 2018 Iris is a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra where she had the pleasure of touring through Cuba, Canada, Europe, Oman and the United Arab Emirates and performing in venues like the Royal Albert Hall (BBC-Proms), the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
Iris grew up in a musical familiy surrounded by brass and wind players so she decided to add percussion to the family. She is currently studying for an Artist Diploma at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with Adrian Spillett, Matthew Hardy, Grahame King, Owen Gunnell and Toby Kearney. Next to freelancing as a timpanist and percussionist with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra she is busy with her new percussion trio ‘Tresonant’ based in Birmingham with percussionists Alexander Henshaw and Nick Cowling, focusing on commissioning new percussion music and introducing the contemporary percussion repertoire to a wider audience.
For the 2020-2022 seasons she enjoys being an Academist with the Budapest Festival Orchestra where she will play under the baton of Iván Fischer and will be involved in tours through the United States and Europe.
In the summers of 2020 and 2021 Iris participates as an academist at the Campus Grafenegg Summer Aademy lead by International Solo Percussionist Colin Currie and trumpet player Håkan Hardenberger. Furthermore she was academist in the inaugural year of the NEXT Academy with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) where she worked closely with composers, performed new commissions and played in BCMG as an extra player.
She did her Bachelors at the Royal conservatoire of the Hague before moving to Birmingham where she had lessons in not only classical percussion but also in African drumming and Basler (Swiss) drumming. During her time in the Hague she went on an Erasmus Exchange at the Royal College of Music in London, where giving a concert under the baton of Bernard Haitink was a definite highlight.
