Born in 1996, João started to play the double bass when he was six years old.
He studied with Pedro Wallenstein and Romeu Santos in Conservatório da Metropolitana de Lisboa and after with Manuel Rego in Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. He finished his Master in Codarts in Rotterdam with Luis Cabrera in the summer of 2020.
He played in several professional orchestras and youth orchestras such as: Jovem Orquestra Portuguesa, Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée, Jong Metropole, Nationaal Jeugd Orkest, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra Gulbenkian, Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa, Orquestra XXI, Orchestre de Picardie, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, Pynarello and is a member of European Union Youth Orchestra.
João also participated in the XIII and XIV International Early Music Course from Esmae where he had his first contact with viola da gamba with Xurxo Varela and baroque orchestra with Stefano Veggetti. In 2018 he also recorded an album with Sónia Oliveira with contemporary music for
double bass and voice. In September 2019 João participated in the Ferrara Chamber Academy, where he played a chamber version of Mahler 1st Symphony with other EUYO members and two tutors from Chamber Orchestra of Europe.
In July 2020 João was a tutor of Jovem Orquestra Portuguesa, working with the viola, cello and double bass sections.
João was a holder of a scholarship by Gulbenkian Foundation from 2018 to 2020.
