The EUYO's Amsterdam Community Day 2022 will see the Orchestra's musicians appearing in several Amsterdam city museums, reaching new audiences with performances of a remarkably wide selection of musical genres that include a significant amount of music by 21st century composers.
The day includes pieces by noted female composers such as Jennifer Higdon and Jessie Montgomery, as well as Wojciech Kilar's neoclassical Quintet for Wind Instruments, Emmanuel Séjourné's lively duet for marimba and vibraphone inspired by Spanish Flamenco music, and David Bruce's Gumboots, a haunting piece of music born out of the brutal labour conditions of gumboot wearing miners chained together in South Africa's flooded gold mines.
There is also a special tribute to one of the greatest composers of the last half century, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, who passed away at the age of 87 in April 2022, with a rare opportunity to hear his piece Cortege, a 2007 reworking of an earlier composition Ritual Fragments. Cortege features 14 musicians arranged into a semicircle, each player successively stepping into a central solo position to play, and then handing over the solo spot to a different instrument, thereby creating a fascinating dance of changing identities, with all 14 players moving effortlessly between the roles of supporting accompanist and virtuoso soloist.
