Peter Gane (1948 – 2024)
As our brass tutor, Peter Gane coached generations of EUYO musicians. Everyone he taught, and everyone he worked with, past and present – musicians, colleagues, and the EUYO management team – are greatly saddened by his passing. In his memory, we have awarded him the honorary title of the EUYO’s first Tutor Laureate.
Peter was the longest serving tutor of the EUYO, since the days when we were the European Community Youth Orchestra. He was also trombone tutor to the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, among other well-known youth orchestras. His outstanding gifts as a pedagogue are further reflected in the fact he was Professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama from 1971, then elected a Fellow of the School, then Head of Wind Brass and Percussion (1988 – 2008), and ultimately Senior Professor. He was presented with the Neill Humfield Award for excellence in trombone teaching by the International Trombone Association in 1996, and the British Trombone Society’s outstanding contribution award in 2013. He was also former Assistant Principal Trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Founder and first President of the British Trombone Society (1984).
